Volunteer Coaches
Volunteer coaches are what make our program go. If you are interested in coaching, please reach out to us ASAP so we can add you to our coaches list.
COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT
Most important is to be a Positive Role Model for your kids! Show Good Sportsmanship at all times. Remember that you are a youth basketball coach, and that the game is for the children and not the adults. Our goal is for every player to improve and learn something new this season and to have fun!
-
It is your responsibility to visit the website for updates and changes. It is not the responsibility of the Management Team to call and remind you of due dates and deadlines!
-
Practice can be conducted on any outdoor location in the Arcadia area. Practicing or scrimmaging with other teams at any outdoor facility will be allowed.
-
Abide by all rules and regulations set forth by AYB.
-
Treat all players equally and instruct them in the fundamentals of youth basketball
-
Place the emotional and physical well-being of the players above any personal desire to win.
-
Provide a safe playing environment for the players.
-
Abide by disciplinary decisions made by the Management Team.
-
Make sure our team, parents, and spectators respect the rules and regulations regarding cleaning, maintenance, safety, and refreshments in the gymnasium.
-
Treat all players, coaches, officials, and the public with respect.
-
Do not use foul, abusive, negative, or aggressive language towards any player, coach, referee, or parent/spectator.
-
Do not approach or talk to the other team's players while coaching your team
-
Allow referees or officials to have the final decision during games.
-
If a coach is being disruptive, the referees will give a warning before assessing a technical, unless there is foul language or behavior that warrants an automatic technical.
-
After 1 technical, the coach must sit down for the remainder of the game. After 2 technicals, the coach will be removed from coaching the rest of the game and the assistant coach or one of the player's parent will step up to coach.
-
If there are any unruly spectators, the referees will give them a warning. If the behavior continues, the referees will ask the offending team's coach to remove the spectator from the gym.
-
Only the head coach, asst. coach, and/or team have contact with their players during games and practices. Do not allow unauthorized individuals to "fill-in" at any time.
-
Only 1 head coach and 1 assistant coach, if applicable, may be at the bench during the games. If a team has more than 1 assistant coach, the other assistant coaches will need to sit as a spectator.
-
Only the designated head coach will be allowed to stand during the game. Assistant coaches must remain seated at all times, except during timeouts and to react to an outstanding play.
-
Only the designated head coach who starts the game can finish coaching the game. The head coach and assistant coach cannot alternate positions during the game.
-
Only the designated head coach can request subs and call timeouts.
-
Student coaches will be required to have a team parent present at practices and at the games.
-
Do not come onto the court or leave the bench for any reason, unless instructed to do so by a game official or league representative.
-
Do not address and/or approach the scorer's table in an aggressive manner or use profanity.
-
Officials, scorekeepers, and AYB staff have the authority to remove a player, coach, or parent/spectator from a game and can declare the game a forfeit due to unsportsmanlike conduct. If poor sportsmanship behavior continues, the offending player, coach or parent/spectator may be suspended from future games or removed from the league.
-
Do not charge players for practice or training sessions during the AYB season.
-
AYB uniforms are to be worn for playing in AYB games in the School District gyms. Do not have your team wear AYB uniforms to play in non-AYB affiliated games.
-
If a team is without a coach, the Management Team will appoint an interim coach until a permanent coach can be found and approved.
-
Be responsible for your bench areas and your assistant coach.
-
Remember this motto: Let the referees ref, the coaches coach, the players play, and the parents cheer.
BENCH DECORUM
-
The coach shall be aware that he or she has a tremendous influence, for either good or ill, on the education of the student and, thus, shall never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character.
-
The coach should meet and exchange cordial greetings with the opposing coach to set the correct tone for the event before and after the game.
-
The coach shall respect and support officials. The coach shall not indulge in conduct which would incite players or spectators against the officials.
-
Head coach is allowed to stand and coach. He/she loses the privilege to stand if he/she or any assistant coach is assessed a technical foul. They must sit for the remainder of the game. They can only stand to provide a substitute or call a time out.
-
Coaching box is 28 feet from the end line to the mid court line. For reference it must not go beyond the first chair. The coach must not stand/block the scorer’s table at anytime.
-
Derogatory comments or yelling at officials will result in a warning and if it continues, a technical foul will be assessed. If foul language is used or throwing objects on to the court, such as a clip board the coach/assistant will receive an automatic technical foul
-
Two technical fouls result in an automatic ejection. Coach must leave the premises. If they refuse, game will be over and score remains.
-
Respect for opposite coaches, players, scorer and referees is expected at all times. Disrespectful conduct including verbal abuse of opponents and officials, profane or belligerent trash talking, taunting, profanity & intimidating behavior will not be tolerated.
REGILARILY SCHEDULED PRACTICES
Each team is permitted to practice once a week for an hour at a regularly scheduled time and place assigned by the coach. (i.e., private school gyms, Elementary/Middle School Outdoor Courts, Parks etc...).
MAKE-UP PRACTICES
If a practice time is cancelled due to weather, holiday or other use of the assigned gym space (i.e., band practice), coaches should contact their team's parents and ask for assignment of an alternative practice time.
A team may practice twice in one week if they should choose to. Coaches should anticipate possible practice cancellations (i.e., if practice day is a holiday) and arrange for make-ups as soon as possible.
Coaches are required to give parents ample time to know if a practice is to be cancelled. Simply cancelling 30 minutes prior is unacceptable. Please use your judgment.
ATTENDANCE
Players should not attend practice or the games if they are sick. Please send them home if they show up to practice or the games.
